“It was the nadir of the Depression, when 25 percent of America was unemployed, and Rivera had something to say,” notes MoMA curator Leah Dickerman. She says that in 1931, the museum, eager for him to create murals like the ones he made in Mexico, gave him an empty gallery, six weeks and three assistants who worked around the clock to produce the freestanding frescoes.
MoMA wasn’t able to corral all eight for this show: Two remain in Philadelphia and one, of brawny pneumatic drillers, went AWOL decades ago. Still, you’ll see facsimiles of the missing, plus the charcoal studies that Rivera transferred onto wet cement and the sketches he made in Moscow during a heady celebration of the Russian Revolution. Except for a newspaper photo identifying her as “the artist’s wife,” there’s little here of Kahlo, the brilliant, beetle-browed painter whose fame, partly fueled by her dramatic life — crippling pain, her husband’s infidelities — has nearly eclipsed Rivera’s.
