SHAMOKIN -- When Mount Carmel coach Carmen DeFrancesco looks at this week's PIAA Class AA quarterfinal opponent, Lancaster Catholic, on film, the only thing that makes the Crusaders look much different from his Red Tornadoes are the Crusaders' colors.
"This is the biggest challenge we've seen all season simply because of the caliber of the athletes -- not only in talent, but in numbers," DeFrancesco said. "They are big and strong up front, just like us."
The Red Tornadoes (12-1) and Crusaders (13-0) will play at noon Saturday at Shamokin's Kemp Memorial Stadium, the fourth time they have met, all of them Lancaster Catholic victories.
"They are a very athletic football team and their skill-position players are good. They almost look like a mirror image of us, although they spread it out more," he said of the team in purple and gold.
The most recent meeting was LC's 2008 state quarterfinal win in Hershey, when the Crusaders handed the Red Tornadoes their first and only loss of the season behind all-state quarterback Kyle Smith.
