• NEW MELONES RESERVOIR — Guide Danny Layne called the reservoir a "prime location" for trout. They're chasing threadfin shad schools into the shallows. Clients have landed 20 or more trout per trip this week while trolling from 20 to 45 feet in water less than 80 feet in depth. He has been matching his bait to the size of the shad using small-profile spoons. Melanie Lewis of Glory Hole Sporting Goods in Angels Camp said trout fishing is good and getting better with 2- to 3-pound holdovers in addition to planters. Bank anglers are getting their share in the mornings using Power Bait on a sliding sinker rigs in shallow water near the back of Angels or Glory Hole coves. Kastmasters or ExCels scented with threadfin shad scent or Pautske's Eggs are also effective from the banks. Bank action will get even better as the water cools and the lake turns over within the next couple of weeks.
