ONE has rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, twice, the other has run the length of the Great Wall of China. Both are of a unique species. Now another, more dangerous challenge awaits extreme adventurers Peter van Kets of East London and Braam Malherbe when they set off on a race to the South Pole on January 1. The challenge, which involves teams from seven nations, is the Scott-Amundsen Centenary Race to the Pole – set in the backdrop of about 760km of the coldest, most treacherous and rugged terrain on earth. Given this setting and the inherent dangers, to be faced each day, it’s a venture for the bravest of the brave.
Other competing teams come from Norway, the United Kingdom (2), Ireland, Germany and Holland. All these countries will be represented by three-man teams, but Van Kets and Malherbe are the only two representing South Africa.
