Strathroy connection to “The Charge of the Light Brigade”
The house at 97 Front St. West in Strathroy was owned for many years by the Malone family.
Joseph Malone, a patriarch of this family, won the Victoria Cross for his part in the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Battle of Balaclava in 1854. This brave but deadly charge was later immortalized in Tennyson's "The Charge of the Light Brigade".
The Victoria Cross was instituted in 1856 but was awarded retroactively to the autumn of 1854 to cover acts of heroism during the Crimean War. Queen Victoria herself awarded this medal on June 25, 1857 to 57 officers and men for great acts of courage during this War. Among these heroes was Joseph Malone.
Joseph enlisted in the 13th Light Dragoons in 1851 and was promoted to Lance-Sergeant and served in the Crimea from 1854 to 1856. He was 21 years old at the time of the battle. He had his horse shot out from under him and was returning to his lines on foot. He stopped under heavy enemy fire and with the help of other soldiers removed a severely wounded Captain Webb of the 17th Lancers to a safer place, further endangering his own life. Unfortunately Captain Webb did not survive his injuries, but Sergeant Malone did survive the battle and the war.
