Coming tonight to a neighborhood near you ... fairies and Jedis and ghosts — oh my!
This evening our neighborhoods will be swarming with costumed kids who waited all year long for this candy extravaganza called Halloween, and ranking right up there in importance with the "loot" is the costume.
If you plan ahead and don't mind spending a small fortune, you always can order one from a website, but if it slips your mind — even though your child reminds you every single day — you still have options. You always can run to a local costume shop or party store, but these costumes also can be expensive and your child possibly could end up looking like every another mass-produced superhero or princess in the neighborhood.
If you're searching for a one-of-a-kind last-minute costume idea, look no further than your garage or storage closet for a large box. Cardboard boxes are great starting points for Halloween costumes. One of my favorite childhood costumes was a robot costume my father made for me out of two stacked boxes, a bigger one for my body attached to a smaller one for my head. It was spray painted silver (aluminum foil works well, too) and was topped with coiled pipe cleaners with ping-pong balls on the ends for antennae.
