Coats cure cold in Yuba-Sutter

Sleeping inside the cab of their truck, Starr Souza and Matthew Gowey say it can be cold at night.

They tape around the windows and burrow in blankets as she curls on the front seat, and he stretches on the back seat in hopes of a restful night's sleep. But as temperatures dip lower, the couple who moved here from San Diego last year were expecting the nights to become almost unbearable.

Now they think they will sleep a little cozier, in the warmth of new coats and jackets given to them at the annual Yuba-Sutter Coats for Kids and Adults giveaway Saturday, organized by the Sunset Buttes Lions Club. A line of men, women and children stretched out the door at the 9 a.m. opening Saturday, where the Camp Singer gymnasium in Marysville had been transformed into a makeshift department store filled with racks of coats and tables of scarves, hats and gloves.

"I feel like I am on a shopping spree," Souza said, picking a red rain jacket and fluffy lined coat to go over a sweatshirt. She is disabled and Gowey has been job hunting for months, so they barely have enough money for essentials, let alone new clothes.
