After a ton of feedback regarding my winter training prologue a few columns back, I quickly discovered I had enough questions and suggestion to break the topic up into three separate columns: clothing and accessories, bike preparation and maintenance and motivation. This week I'll tackle some of the basics of clothing.
But first a couple of reminders. Keep in mind that the main target of this column is those who are interested in starting winter training for competitive cycling. There are boundless resources online and in books for winter commuting tips, so I will try to avoid repeating. I will instead offer tips for those riders wanting to stay safe for the longer, steady efforts and whose primary goal is developing cardiovascular fitness and endurance.
I mentioned last time that the great threat to the winter cyclist isn't cold, per se, but moisture. From sweat, respiration or precipitation, water on skin leeches heat much more quickly than air on skin. Staying dry for long efforts at great intensity becomes incredibly important, not just for comfort but for safety.
