These everyday items are anything but humdrum to American troops serving in forward command bases in Afghanistan and Iraq, where life's little conveniences are often hard to come by.
That's why Operation: With Love From Home, a Napa-based organization with umbrella sponsorship from Queen of the Valley Medical Center , sends literally tons of supplies each year to these overseas troops.
Lisa Huntley started the operation in 2007 when her son was serving in Iraq.
"Five years later, we've sent 13 tons of supplies," Huntley said Saturday, as about 150 volunteers helped assemble individual care packages stuffed with goodies.
Much of the contents were practical in nature: warm socks, neck gaiters, cotton swabs, sharpened pencils and writing paper.
But each box also received a beanbag toy, a letter from a local schoolchild and a tiny, folded American flag.
