Volunteers send troops a piece of home

When Army Sgt. Phillip Schmidt received his first care package while he was deployed to Iraq in 2005, it was like Christmas.

There were everyday items that were a rarity to soldiers deployed overseas, such as snacks, condiments, socks and books. For Schmidt the prized possession in the box was a neck gaiter that could be soaked in water, keeping the hot desert sun off the back of his neck while he working outside.

The package also made Schmidt feel that the war he was fighting was worth it. It was a reminder that people at home were thinking of him.

"It's not just filled with stuff," said Schmidt, now 31. "It's filled with love from home. And it really does feel amazing."

Schmidt's package was the first delivered to troops overseas by a volunteer effort that became what is today the Simi Valley-based nonprofit For the Troops.
