The Lemont couple use fleece made from used plastic water bottles for their line of water-repellent outdoor clothing for adults and children. Their company, Knütes, buys Polartec 300 fabric directly from Polartec, formerly Malden Mills Industries, the fleeces inventor.
The Lawrence, Mass., company produces several kinds of fleece from recycled fibers a priority that resonates with Penny Eifrig. As a child, she watched her mother, local activist Sue Smith, start a recycling center in State College.
I grew up with this very environmental upbringing, she said.
A small Williamsport business, Equinox, manufactures the Knütes designs. The Eifrigs chose the company in part because they liked how it pays and treats its employees.
Almost 20 years ago, Knütes started from a height difference.
