Here's Something for You: Urban Skiing
SUN VALLEY • Carol Rank emerges from her home just south of Ketchum and trudges a block through the snow to the bike path where she slips the toes of her cross-country boots into her skate skis.
Skating down the groomed skate path, she arrives at work eight miles later where she pulls off her neck gaiter and ties on the mask of a dental hygienist.
Urban skiing in the Wood River Valley doesn’t need a monster snowstorm like those that lure New Yorkers out of their houses to cross-country ski on the streets. Nor does it need rails or ledges to slide down as freestyle skiers like to do.
Urban skiing in the Sun Valley area is defined by the proximity of groomed Nordic trails to the people who live there. Many people, like Rank, have to go little more than a block or two to the bike path, which turns into a free Nordic trail stretching 22 miles from Bellevue to just north of Ketchum during winter.
And additional loops are close at hand in Quigley Canyon, which sits adjacent to Wood River High School in Hailey; the Lake Creek trails at Ketchum’s north end, and Sun Valley Nordic Center, which offers 40 kilometers of trails on the golf course next to the Sun Valley Lodge.
